Hi Claude, It was lovely to hear from you. Oh yes, we remember you well as we do our visit to St Croix. The funny thing is my daughter now keeps rare breed pigs, which always remind me of the beer drinking variety.

It was a very sad time for us when we lost our home in April, but things have moved on and you get over it. It is however sad that we are not seeing all of the friends that we met on our travels, especially Patty and Bill. They are dreadful when it comes to email communications, but please tell them that we miss them loads when you see or hear from them again. It was such great fun.

We have now bought a replacement boat thanks in part to the insurance company, but having spent more on it than we should, we will not be travelling much in 2010, but hopefully we will get her out to the Med for a while.

Thank you so much for thinking of us and we hope that we will meet up with you again in the not too distant future. Please keep in touch.

Love to all

Helen

Dear Paul & Helen,
I had been informed of your sad loss by Patty Beach, fellow sailor of yours from St.Croix,USVI and also a dear friend who was the key element for my meeting both of you. Remember the beer drinking pigs in the rain forest?.
Paul as sad as it was to read some parts of your adventure on the HMG, having lost everything, it was also very uplifting to read that you are willing to try again and buy another boat. I found myself rather disgusted as I read about the lack of compassion you encountered on St.Kitts and then it's impossible to ignore that tickling feeling in the heart as you talk of the wonderful people you met on Tortola. I have enjoyed very much reading your blog, you are also a wonderful writer, perhaps you and Helen can write a book in a couple of years about all the places you have visited, and of the people you have met.
To you Helen, I couldn't keep a straight face when Paul mentioned that in the mist of losing your boat you just had to go back for your sandals? that is something I would do.
I wish you both the best, looking forward to reading about your new boat and new adventures. But while you buy the next boat, if you decide to thaw for a few weeks you are welcome to stay at our house on St.Croix.
Take care of yourselves.

Dear Joanna

Thank you for reading the last days of Helen Mary Gee and for taking the trouble to post your comment. It is the kindness and thoughtfulness of our fellow sailors and friends that have amazed us over the very traumatic time surrounding the loss of HMG.

The following night as we anchored off Saba, we were looking out at the water where she had sunk and as the sunset I took a picture to always remind me of our beautiful boat. At the moment I have it on my computer's desktop!

A lot of our friends have thanked us for writing the story as it has made them very aware of the need to be prepared on trips that we all take for granted. I know that you are new to sailing and this story does nothing to still the nerves that we all feel when we undertake a night sail or long passage. We as experienced sailors still have worries. These sort of incidents do not often happen. We were just in the wrong place at the wrong time. We however survived the ordeal.

I wish you many miles of happy sailing. It is a wonderful way to meet new people and see the world.

Be safe and enjoy yourself - Best wishes Helen

Having just been exactly where you were on our sailboat, Delphinus, it was even more shocking and sad to read about your loss. I have only been sailing for 4 months (my husband since he was about 7) so I am brand new to cruising, and the Virgin Gorda-Saba run was the first overnight sail I had ever done. I know the exact area where you were and I must admit being moved to tears by the thought of your lovely boat going down, what an absolutely devastating sight that must have been, the loss of your home, your memories, your things. Being on a boat I think one is far more attached to the things on one's boat than when back on land at at home, so my heart goes out to you and hope that you soon find a new boat and are out there cruising again. We will look out for you on the high seas.

I have to confess I had a tear welling in my eye as I read that. It must have taken something to get it down on paper - a very emotional story beautifully told. Heartening to hear of the friendship and human good nature you experienced in so many people you'd only just met. Joyful that you're now able to see the beginnings of the Phoenix rising!

Paul & Helen,

I've just caught up with the HMG blog for the first time in a few weeks, and am devastated by your news. Having had the privilege and pleasure of sharing time and many memorable experiences with you aboard HMG I'm feeling like I've lost a best friend, and you must feel like you've lost one of the family. The good news of course is that you both came through OK.

HMG may be lost now but I know her spirit lives on in your hearts!...

Thinking of you both,

Love from Chris & Kasia

Dear Paul & Helen,
Holy ****, that was a nasty turn and not the story I expected when I logged on.
I am glad you are both safe and very sad to hear of the way your adventure has been curtailed. I read the story with a lump in my throat expecting HMG to be grounded and safe at the 11th hour not a haven for fishes.
Take care call when you feel up to it.
Love to you both.

Helen & Paul-

I read this account with the hairs on my neck standing at attention. I guess I knew that you were both OK, but it was still extraordinarily unnerving to read of your misfortune. You must be devastated to lose the Helen Mary Gee.
Our thoughts are with you and we hope that whatever path you take in the near future it is a safe and healthy one.

Should you find yourself in the NJ/NY/PA area we would love to see you and have plenty of room in our home.

Best wishes to you and yours!

Peter & Larry Tannenbaum
(We met you on "Annie" with Allan and Phylicity)

Hi Helen & Paul, I just got the chance to check out your website and I love it. I had no idea that Paul was such a good photographer, I'm impressed.
I hope that even though the weather wasn't so great while you visited St.Croix, along with Captain Bill and Patty, you enjoyed your visit to St.Croix.
It was really nice meeting you both and perhaps some time in the future you will come back and stay a bit longer.
Wishing you the best.
